Background
Abdullah Al Salem University (AASU) is a newly established English-medium public, research based university in Kuwait. AASU aims to provide an interdisciplinary environment for teaching and research. It also aims to nurture the development of novel and innovative solutions to address national and global challenges. Faculty members are being recruited for the spring of 2023/2024 and fall of 2024/2025.
The College of Engineering & Energy at AASU offers degree programs in various disciplines listed below:
- Biomedical and Instruments Engineering
- Energy Systems Engineering
- Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering
The focus of the teaching and research will be to cover a broad range of traditional, emerging, and interdisciplinary areas that will help address impending societal challenges. The programs will be closely linked to the activities of the Center for Resource, Energy and Sustainability, the Center for Advanced Material Science and Engineering, the Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research as well as the Center for Health and Wellbeing.
AASU is hereby inviting applications for the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic years. Candidates should have a proven track record for excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and also have an established research record, demonstrated by publishing high-impact papers and other applicable research outcomes.
Expectations, Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The selected faculty members are expected to teach deep subject knowledge including key concepts, current and relevant research, methodologies, tools and techniques, along with meaningful applications. Additionally, faculty members are also expected to work closely and maintain continuous affiliation with relevant research centers at AASU.
Specifically, faculty members at the college will be responsible for:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Engaging in interdisciplinary basic, applied or policy research.
- Contributing to a thriving research program by engaging in national and international scientific collaborations.
- Receiving grants from local and international funding agencies.
- Mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students.
- Engaging in continuous scholarly activities and professional development.
- Serving on program level, college level, and university level committees.
- Performing any additional duties assigned by the program chair, college dean, and/or AASU management.
Required Qualifications
- Applicant must have a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, or Medicine from an accredited university with a GPA of at least 3.00 (out of 4.00) with relevant professional experience.
- For the Biomedical and Instruments Engineering positions, applicants must have a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a GPA of at least 3.00 (out of 4.00) or equivalent.
- For the Energy Systems Engineering positions, applicants must have a Ph.D. in Energy Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering with a GPA of at least 3.00 (out of 4.00) or equivalent.
- For the Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering positions, applicants must have a Ph.D. in Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Engineering with a GPA of at least 3.00 (out of 4.00) or equivalent.
- Applicants should have a distinguished teaching record including experience in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Applicants must have a proven track record of research, including high quality publications in the relevant field in refereed international journals listed and indexed in the Journal Citation Report (JCR). The h-index (ISI/SCOPUS) should be no less than 15 for Professor ranks, 10 for Associate Professor ranks and 5 for Assistant Professor ranks.
- Recent publications should be in field of the program the applicants are applying for.
- Applicants should have a strong record of mentoring and advising students and supervising other students related activities.
- Applicants must have the potential to attract students and funding from external funding sources/agencies, both locally and internationally.
- Applicants should have previous experience in administrative, academic, or executive committees at the program, college, or university levels.
- Applicants should possess strong communication skills (in English), both written and verbal, as well as exceptional organizational skills, leadership skills in a multicultural and international environment with the ability to pursue and foster collaboration.
- All degrees held by the applicants must be approved by the Government Universities Council in Kuwait or AASU.
- For Assistant Professor ranks, it is preferrable to have a Ph.D. degree from one of top 100 universities as ranked by US News, Times Higher Education, or QS rankings.
Required Experience
Full Professor
- A Full Professor must have experience as a faculty member of not less than ten years in an accredited university after being recruited on the rank of Assistant Professor.
- A Full Professor must have been scientifically promoted to the rank of Associate Professor at one of the institutions approved by the Government Universities Council in Kuwait or AASU.
Associate Professor
- An Associate Professor must have experience as a faculty member of not less than five years in an accredited university after being recruited on the rank of Assistant Professor.
- An Associate Professor must have been scientifically recruited/promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor at one of the institutions approved by the Government Universities Council in Kuwait or AASU.
Assistant Professor
- An Assistant Professor must have experience as a faculty member of not less than three years in accredited university after being recruited on the rank of Assistant Professor.
- An Assistant Professor must have been scientifically recruited on the rank of Assistant Professor at one of the institutions approved by the Government Universities Council in Kuwait or AASU.

- Updated and comprehensive CV which should include information on employment history, teaching experience, committees and administrative experience, full list of publications, research activities and grants, students’ supervision, consulting, honors, awards, and others as applicable.
- Scanned copies of all academic degrees and transcripts.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
- Statement of research interests.
- Statement of teaching philosophy and interests.
- Names/affiliation and contact details of at least four professional referees.
- Copies of two citation reports (Web of Science and/or Scopus).
All degrees (post-high school) and transcripts will need to undergo the equivalency process from the Ministry of Higher Education in Kuwait. Authenticated copies of all degrees and transcripts must be provided by selected applicants.
