Background

Abdullah Al Salem University (AASU) is a newly established English-medium public university offering world-class degree programs in various disciplines. Instruction at AASU will begin in September 2023. AASU has a Preparatory Program (PP) which helps students in building required level of competency in the use of English, Arabic, Mathematics, and IT skills.

The Director of Preparatory Program will serve as a member of AASU’s administrative leadership team tasked with identifying and achieving AASU strategic goals, its mission, and learning outcomes.

The Director will represent AASU to external institutes and educational bodies as needed, and will be directly responsible for the oversight of the Preparatory Program. Responsibilities will include recruitment, supervision, development, and leadership of the faculty and its staff. The Director will also ensure high quality of deliverables to meet student needs.

Required Qualifications

  • MSc degree in TESOL, Language Education, or Applied Linguistics is required.
  • TEFL/CELTA Certificate and a Ph.D. degree in one of the above mentioned fields is preferred.
  • All degrees have to be from universities listed by NBAQ (https://nbaq.edu.kw/search/index-en.html).
  • At minimum, five years of experience in a faculty and curriculum leadership role, preferably in a university-based intensive English program and a minimum of 5 years teaching experience in higher education English language programs, with demonstrated teaching excellence.
  • Experience teaching abroad is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptionally responsive and detail-oriented personality.
  • Ability to be an effective team builder, work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • High level of professionalism and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work under pressure and overtime when needed and adapt to changing priorities and environment as well as a willingness to continue learning.
  • Ability to lead in a multicultural, and educational environment.
  • Knowledge of English language program accreditation processes (e.g., BALEAP or CEA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing and reviewing all aspects related to the academic courses in a manner that meets all requirements of a standardized curriculum, is relevant to student needs, and is linked to the mission and vision of AASU.
  • Working collaboratively with AASU leadership to ensure the implementation of the strategic plan and monitor the progress towards these academic goals.
  • Planning and conducting regular staff and faculty meetings.
  • Preparing reports regarding faculty and staff as well as annual accreditation reports.
  • Collecting data on student advancement and feedback, student progress and program fit.
  • Conducting teacher observations and providing feedback.
  • Building relations at different levels: faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
  • Recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating the academic faculty and administrative staff.
  • Supervising the placement, testing, and evaluation of all students.
  • Supervising the scheduling of classes and assignment of teachers and students to classes.
  • Supervising the Associate Directors.
  • Identifying needed supplies, textbooks, and materials for the programs.
  • Performing other duties as necessary or assigned.
  • Teaching courses as assigned and as necessary.

Required Documents

  • Updated curriculum vitae.
  • Scanned copies of all degrees and transcripts (authenticated copies needed if application is successful).
  • Equivalency certificates from the Ministry of Higher Education in Kuwait for bachelor’s and master’s degrees obtained from a university other than Kuwait University (authenticated copies needed if application is successful).
  • Experience letters or certificates.
  • At least 2 letters of recommendation.
